Documentation Ski Guide 2.0

Val d’Isère Ski Guide is the app you need if you plan to go skiing to Val d’Isère on the Espace Killy.

Points of interest

More than 300 points of interest have been localised on the maps. They are spread among 12 categories (Transportation, Services, Health, Restaurants, Ski Lifts, Lodging, Shops, Bars, Banks, Associations, Activities, Information). A search module allows you to search for any text either within your selected category or on the complete database.

This button (located on the upper right corner of the screen) reveal the search button :

Friends finder

This feature is one of the most innovative function of Val d’isère Ski Guide. It allows you to temporarily share your positioning data with your friends while you are in the ski area. Unlike other very intrusive solutions, such as Facebook and Google Latitude, your location information is shared with you chosen friends and by default for 24 hours only. Your position sharing will automatically stop after this period of time hence your private life is protected by default ( not the opposite )

Choose your friends

How does it work ?

It’s as simple as 1,2,3.

You go to the “Friends” tab located in the tab bar at the bottom of your screen and you hit the + button. Now you select “Invite a friend” and give them the invitation code. You can send them by SMS or email or even tell them the code directly. You’re done.

On your Friend’s end they select the “Friends” tab and hit “Enter your friend’s invitation code” where they type the code. If they they received the code by email on their iPhone, they simply have to hit the code and confirm.

See your friends on the map

From there on, you will be able to follow each other on the ski map using the Show Friends button located on the upper right menu on the map screen.

Messages

You can also send messages to your friends either one by one or using the broadcast to all friends button.

Event Calendar

Val d’isère Ski Guide now includes the list of all events organised by the resort. Using this mode, you can see what is happening during your stay in Val d’isère.

If your iPhone uses the latest version of iOS4, you can trigger an automatic notification for an event you have selected. Your phone will remind you 30 minutes prior the beginning of the event.

Touch this icon to disable the reminder.

Maps

In this version, we have added a new high definition map of the village to help you find your way. You can now use the application either in the context of the ski area or in the village. Both location management and point of interests are usable in those 2 contexts. As with the ski map, the app locates you on the map and if you are not in the resort, it allows you to pan and zoom within the maps.

Those detailled maps are pretty heavy data centric features. We advise you to preload the complete map on a Wireless Network (WIFI) or at least on a free data service network. Since you are probably a roamer when you are visiting France, we have designed this feature to save your money while you ‘re skiing.

To start downloading the map, hit the “Start” button located in the info tab. Map pieces are then downloaded directly to your iPhone and will enhance you experience with Ski Guide.

Ski Map

To ease your use of the app, we have now centralised most information on the map screen. You can acces these features using the menu button (located on the upper right corner of your screen).

You can now see directly on the map, the slope status, webcams, pictures, and the location of your friends.

Be aware that most features need a data stream so be carefull with your roaming fees. You probably want to sync your application on the hotel WIFI before you go if you don’t have roaming data on.

If you are on the ski resort, this button will center the map around your location. This feature is disabled if you’re not in the resort.

Our unique technology has been registered at the French board INPI.

Sharing

This feature is now embedded in the Ski Map screen. You can share your pictures taken while you were skiing with your friends. If you don’t want to use Roaming Data (and we are sure you don’t) the photos will only be uploaded when you connect your iPhone to a Wireless (WIFI) Network.

Your pictures will be located directly on the map under this icon

You should also find pictures posted by other users on these locations.

Using the camera, you can take a picture of your best jump and post a comment with your photo, so other users can see it.

If you ‘ve chosen to twit, your post will show up on your timeline.

Directions

This mode helps you find the best way to reach a specific destination. It pretty much works as your car GPS. Choose your starting point (it can be your current location or any specific bookmark) and your target point. Ski Guide will draw the path for you. You can even change the trail level to meet your own ski level.

Ski Guide is your navigation system while you’re skiing !!

Using the ‘Live’ option brings the trails status into the picture. Ski Guide will then find the path looking only at the oppened slopes and skilifts.

Choose the red pin as your starting point then hit the “Start” button located in the callout.

Then, select your destination using the same method and validate with this icon

Orientation

This mode is dedicated to iPhone 3GS owners. It allows you to know the names of the moutains around you while you are in Val d’isère.

To use it, just hit the center of the screen and place your iPhone in “Portrait” mode in front of you. The surrounding main mountains and big cities will appear on your screen.

Weather forecast

Weather forecast is displayed at the bottom of the Ski Map screen. You can scroll left and right to check the different information regarding temperature, wind and road conditions.

You can hide / show the weather information using these buttons :

  • Show weather forecast
  • Hide weather forecast
